Day 9. An Unsuspected Ally.

By the time Marcus’s roommate was wheeled back into the room his tears had dried up, but he couldn’t hide the fact that he was upset. The orderly parked the wheelchair just inside the room, and left without a word.

“Let me guess, you changed your mind and you don’t hate the girl anymore.”

Marcus looked over at the young red haired man.

Any time he had tried to talk to him the kid had shut him down, he was still bitter about losing his leg. The doctors had tried to save it, but the damage to the bones had proved to be too much and after a month they had finally had to take it. They weren’t friends, just two people who had been thrown together by life, and Marcus had no reason to expect anything from him.

“What’s it to you?” he asked in reply unable to keep the anger at his own stupidity out of his voice.

“Oh nothing, I just wondered if you were sitting there wishing you hadn’t thrown her photo away.” He wheeled himself over to his bed and opened up the draw of his bedside unit.

“I had considered keeping them, she’s real pretty, and that note, bet it kept you up at night.” He reached in and pulled them out before wheeling around his bed and over to Marcus where he held them out to him.

“You took them out of the trash?”

“Yes, I know how it feels to think you would be better off without something, then lose it only to realise just how wrong you were.” He glanced down at his leg that ended just above where his knee used to be.

“Thanks man, its Connor right?” he asked as he reached out to take the photo and pieces of note. “Don’t suppose you have any tape?”

“One miracle at a time,” Connor said with a wink.
