Day 6. Music plays.

You could walk around the base for days without hearing any music, but the last day he had been hearing the same song over and over again wherever he went. He didn’t know who sung it or all the words but there were some phases that seemed to hit him right in the solar plexus.

“Staring at the ceiling in the dark, same old empty feeling in your heart …. You see her when you close your eyes…. but never to touch her, never to keep.”

And the real kicker?

“You only know you love her when you let her go.”

Even now while they were out on patrol he kept hearing the words and tune rolling round his head. The sound of the hummer's motor seemed to be keeping time with the beat in his head. At first he had thought it was kind of catchy, but now he was beginning to hate it. He wished it would just all stop.

He never saw it coming.

The first thing he knew about it was Jack up front starting to swear, then it was just noise, heat and crushing pain, then blackness.

“Oh I love this song, turn it up Jeff,” Carrie called out as she worked behind the coffee machine teaching herself how to make the perfect cup of coffee.

The volume went up and she started to sing along

“ Well you only need the light when it’s burning low, only miss the sun when it starts to snow, only know you love her when you let her go….”
