The big gun went off with a loud boom and kicked up a truck load of what they called moon-dust.
Marcus had his back turned, eyes closed against the dust, and wore earmuffs to try and save his hearing, but he felt the boom echo through the earth and up his legs. Opening his eyes and turning he got ready to pass the next shell to the guy who had just cleared the chamber. Moments later the big gun was ready to fire again, and he braced himself as much as possible, but it was never enough.
The headache he had went all the way down to his toes, and he knew that even tonight in bed he would still feel the way the concussion thumped through his body.
He wished he could allow his mind to wander, but with the noise, dust and possibility of an incoming round he just couldn’t.
Maybe tonight he would be able let his mind wonder to where his girl was and what she was doing. He hoped she wasn’t with another man, the idea of someone else’s hands on her did things to him that were best not explored.
BOOM!
“I hate my life,” he muttered to himself.
