Chapter 2.

Connor took his time checking out small towns on his way through but not finding what he was looking for, so kept moving.

He stayed in roadside motels if one was handy, but he was just as happy bunking down in the back of his truck under the stars, like now, since the weather was still warm this September. Out in the middle of nowhere the stars were bright and many overhead, and he had always enjoyed star gazing. He had spent many a happy night staring up at the stars with his best friend Linnea. Then as they became teens he discovered more than just stars with her. Damn those had been some good times. He could still feel the butterflies in his stomach if he reached back and remembered that very first kiss. That kiss, it had been a revelation that is for sure.

Connor moved, thoughts of Linnea often did this to him, his body remembering how good they had been together and forgetting the fact that she had moved on.

He had kissed a lot of girls since then and he was still waiting for one girl who could come anywhere close to what they had had together when it was good. Theirs hadn’t been an easy relationship, it had stopped and started again twice, but this last time when she said good bye, he knew it was going to be the last. They had changed too much to work, and now with his leg. He had lost it right after she had gone. He reached down and rubbed his hand over the stump and wondered if he would ever get used to the feel of it. She wasn’t much for being guilted into doing anything, but he would hate to think she might feel sorry for him and come back. He didn’t want her pity, or any woman’s pity for that matter. He would live alone before he would accept that, he could take care of his own needs. He groaned and moved again. Needing to distract himself he began to focus on the stars, naming them out loud. The action acting much like counting sheep, soon he was asleep snoring contentedly.
